Unpredictable Environmental Conditions

This week, we’ve had just about every possible weather event. Wind, rain, snow, sleet, slush, hail, sun, clouds, you name it. Welcome to Spring in North Idaho, the land of unpredictable environmental conditions. Just when I get all fired up about seeing a plant emerging from the muck, I look out the window and there’s some semi-frozen precipitation swirling about that makes our yard look like a giant snow globe. Ten minutes later, it’s sunny again. Now, I think I just heard thunder out there. It looks like we’re getting the one weather event we might have missed this week. Eeek.

On Tuesday, I got an e-mail from one of my clients who asked if I’d been washed away with all this rain. I pointed out that up here, it was actually what we term "snain" i.e. something sort of between snow and rain. Whatever it is, it was nasty. Her response was "is that like SNOT? S’not rain. S’not snow?"

Hey, it’s true. I couldn’t make this stuff up.

All this rain, snain, or whatever, apparently manifested itself as actual snow on Schweitzer Mountain. After a truly dismal ski year, the resort now has more snow on the top than it’s had in ages. Enough that they are actually going to re-open the resort this weekend. This somewhat unprecedented move of turning the lifts back on after they’ve been shut down for the season has caused quite a stir.

In other environmental news, don’t forget to set your clock forward on Sunday. It’s "spring forward" time again!

And finally in administrative news, a few of you may not have received the e-mail version of the Insider the last couple weeks. It wasn’t our fault; it was a problem with the mail server. However, you can always read the current issue online in full color right here 🙂
