How to Move the My Documents Folder

Question

Can I move the My Documents folder to a different drive partition? I have all my data stored on my D drive, so I’d rather have it there.

Answer

Yes, you can.

If you go into Windows Explorer, you can find your My Documents lurking in the Documents and Settings folder under your username. So it would be something like:

C:Documents and SettingsYour NameMy Documents.

You can just click and drag the folder onto a different drive. Windows figures out that it’s now on a separate drive and doesn’t really seem to care.

Another way to change it is to use Microsoft’s free Tweak UI utility, which is available here.

In the My Computer section, you can change the location of various folders, including My Documents.
